Entrepreneurship and employment opportunities for indigenous peoples in Russia to be discussed in the United Nations

Center Young Karelia and the International Consultative Committee of Finno-Ugric Peoples with the support of the Russian permanent mission to the United Nations will hold a side event Employment and Entrepreneurship Opportunities Among Indigenous Communities: Challenges and Positive Practices. The event will take place in Geneva on Wednesday, 12 July, in Room XXVII, Palais de Nations. 

This side event will serve as an opportunity to address social inclusion of indigenous peoples, in particular indigenous youth, in the labor market, including employment, self-employment and entrepreneurship opportunities and challenges indigenous peoples face on their way to sustainable community development. Geographically, this side event will focus on Finno-Ugric indigenous peoples of the Russian Federation. Several regional cases from across Russia as well as results of the two World Bank's studies will be presented: On social inclusion of Indigenous Peoples in the labor market in Russia; and Cultural heritage and tourism as factors of socio-economic development of indigenous communities.

The topic of the side event correlates to the theme of the current thematic study of the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and could enrich discussions on indigenous entrepreneurship at the EMRIP's 10th session.

Global Advisor on Indigenous Peoples at the World Bank Luis Felipe Duchisela, UN independent expert Alexey Tsykarev, director of the Association of ethnocultural centers ECHO Svetlana Kolchurina, Vice-Governeur of Yamalo-Nenetsky autonomous okra Aleksandr Mazharov, member of the Council of Representatives of Indigenous Small-Numbered Peoples of the North of Sakhalinskaya oblast Galina Savchenko, and members of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues Aysa Mukabenova and Dmitry Kharakka-Zaiysev will perform as speakers at the upcoming side event. The side event will be moderated by the former president of the Youth Association of Finno-Ugric Peoples, Associate professor ate the Mordovian State University Vasily Nemechkin.
